ASORC’s story began in the mid-1970s, when a group of rehabilitation counselling students in NSW came together to form what would become the Society of Rehabilitation Counsellors (SORC).
What started as a student-led initiative quickly grew into a network of state-based organisations, united by a shared commitment to advancing the profession.
Over time, these state bodies evolved into a single national voice. In 2004, they formally came together under ASORC, strengthening representation and connection across the country. Since then, ASORC has continued to grow - becoming a Company Limited by Guarantee in 2017, and further unifying the profession through its merger with RCAA in 2024.
Today, ASORC represents a strong, collaborative community spanning academia and industry, with a clear focus on advocacy, professional excellence, and the future of rehabilitation counselling.
